February was National Dental Health month.  I visited with the first grade classes about the importance of taking care of our teeth and how to care for our teeth.  Some tips we talked about:
  • It is important to brush your teeth twice a day.
  • It is important to brush every tooth, all sides of the teeth, the gums, and tongue.
  • Flossing and mouthwash can help kill germs that your toothbrush can not reach.
  • Pick healthy snacks and avoid sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Going to the dentist twice a year helps keep your teeth healthy.
  • Tell someone if you have a tooth that hurts.

We also discussed it is important to change toothbrushes after an illness.  Some doctors also recommend changing toothpaste as well.  It is good practice not to share toothpaste when one family member is ill as it can cause the spread of illness.  Oral health has a large impact on overall individual health.
